The United Kingdom has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic and trade reforms, describing them as bold, brave, and positive steps for Nigeria’s future.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the State House, Abuja. The visit also had in attendance the British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever.

According to a statement by Mrs. Busola Kukoyi, Senior Special Adviser to the First Lady on Media, Dr. Montgomery noted that the UK government sees great opportunities emerging from the “difficult but necessary reforms” initiated by President Tinubu. He added that these policies are already strengthening trade partnerships between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The envoy also commended the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), led by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing it as an effective platform for empowering women, particularly in education, health, and humanitarian services.

Speaking further, Montgomery disclosed that the UK government is closely monitoring Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process, particularly proposals to create special legislative seats for women in the National Assembly.

In her response, the First Lady assured her guests that both the government and the Renewed Hope Initiative remain committed to addressing the challenges facing Nigerians, with a special focus on women in the informal sector.

“I believe we can help each other if we really show concern,” Senator Tinubu said. “RHI focuses on women empowerment in the informal sector, touching their lives directly.”

The First Lady also expressed concern about the declining number of women in the National Assembly, promising to support efforts to increase female representation.

“We need the right people to represent us people who can truly do the work. That is what we must enlighten our women about,” she said.

The meeting further reinforced the UK’s commitment to deepening economic cooperation and social development initiatives in Nigeria.
