The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Adio Shamusideen, popularly known as “Shemelon,” for allegedly killing a resident and assaulting a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.
According to a statement by the deceased’s uncle, Agboola Odunfa, 38-year-old Rahmon Imam was attacked along Tapa Street, near Sura Bus Stop, after he tried to calm a dispute between Shamusideen and a tricycle (Keke Marwa) operator.
“Rather than let go, he pounced on Mr. Rahmon Imam, beating him into a coma. He was hospitalised and died three weeks later, on September 17,” Odunfa said.
Odunfa also alleged that Shamusideen assaulted a dispatch rider in a separate incident, leaving the victim in a coma. The rider reportedly died the following day, September 18.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the arrest and said the case has been transferred to the homicide section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
“The case is about one Shamelon who beat somebody and they said that later the person died. It has been transferred to the State CID for investigation, with homicide,” Adebisi said, adding that no further details would be released while the inquiry is ongoing.
The incident has drawn outrage among residents, who are calling for justice for the victims and a broader crackdown on violent extortion in the city’s transport sector.
