
Nigerian media personality and Arise Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, has died following a robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja. She was 29.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, was confirmed in a statement released by Arise News Channel.
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu,” the statement read.
The station described the late journalist fondly called “Sommie” as a vibrant and cherished member of the newsroom whose voice resonated deeply with viewers across Nigeria and beyond.
“Somtochukwu was not only a lawyer by training but also a professional, supportive colleague and friend to many. Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits,” Arise TV said.
The broadcast station also extended its condolences to her parents, siblings, and loved ones, while urging the Nigerian Police Force to ensure a thorough and swift investigation.
Confirming the development, spokesperson of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Josephine Adeh, told NPO Reports that security operatives responded to distress calls from the residence and have since commenced investigations.
“Investigation is ongoing. We are the ones that responded when they called us. So, we are investigating,” Adeh said.
Somtochukwu’s death has thrown colleagues, family, and friends into mourning, as tributes pour in for the young journalist whose career was widely regarded as promising.
