Aviation Unions Withdraw Services at Airports, Join Nationwide Strike

In a significant move, aviation unions across Nigeria have announced their participation in the nationwide indefinite strike called by labour unions. This decision was made public following an emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

Aviation Unions to Cease Operations

Effective from Monday, June 3, 2024, members of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) will withdraw their services at all Nigerian airports. This directive aligns with the nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Statement from the Unions:

“In compliance with the directive from our labour leaders—Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria—we hereby inform the general public, aviation service providers, airline operators, aviation businesses, and all aviation workers nationwide that starting from 0000hrs of June 3, 2024, all services at all Nigerian airports shall be fully withdrawn till further notice.”

Impact on International Travel

Acknowledging the complexities of international travel, the unions have decided that the strike at international terminals will commence on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. This decision aims to mitigate immediate disruption for international flights already en route to Nigeria.

Further Instructions:

“All aviation workers should recognize the seriousness of this struggle and comply unfailingly. All Branch officers of our unions shall ensure full compliance at all airports.”

Background of the Strike

The organized labour, including NLC and TUC, declared the indefinite strike in response to the federal government’s failure to meet their demands, including the implementation of a new minimum wage of N494,000. Despite last-minute appeals from the National Assembly leadership to avert the strike, the unions have decided to proceed, potentially crippling economic activities nationwide.

Notice to the Public:

“We inform the general public, aviation service providers, airline operators, aviation businesses, and all aviation workers nationwide that starting from 0000hrs of June 3, 2024, all services at all Nigerian airports shall be fully withdrawn till further notice.”
