The National Economic Council (NEC) has postponed discussions on establishing state police despite increasing insecurity nationwide. Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri cited time constraints after a lengthy meeting in Abuja. While all 36 states support decentralized policing, the NEC has yet to revisit the issue since December.
Amidst a surge in killings, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has formed a committee to collaborate with security agencies on immediate strategies. This follows deadly attacks in Benue and Plateau states. The NGF also supports increased security recruitment and technology adoption.
The NEC and NGF also discussed land reform initiatives and a potential power sector overhaul. Kaduna Governor Uba Sani reiterated the critical need for state police to address grassroots insecurity, highlighting the shortage of national security personnel. He called for collaborative efforts to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.
