In a landmark ruling, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced controversial cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment without an option of fine for abusing the Naira.
The judge emphasized that this verdict serves as a stern warning to others engaged in similar acts of abusing and mutilating the Naira.
During the trial, when questioned about gender, Bobrisky affirmed his identity as a man.
The court ruled that the jail term would commence from March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
Bobrisky was convicted on April 5, after pleading guilty to counts of abusing the Naira currency filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges against Bobrisky detailed incidents where he tampered with Naira notes during social events, contravening the Central Bank Act of 2007.
In response to the conviction, the judge adjourned the sentencing to last Thursday, which coincided with a public holiday declared by the Federal government for Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
