Businesses Lose Millions Annually to Poor Communication, Report Reveals

Founder and Executive Vice Chair of Poise Nigeria Limited, Mavi Isibor, has highlighted the staggering financial toll of poor communication on businesses, revealing that companies lose millions annually due to ineffective workplace communication.

Citing a Harvard Business Review Business Communication Statistics report, Isibor noted that large corporations with over 100,000 employees suffer losses of approximately $64.4 million per year due to miscommunication, while smaller firms with around 100 employees lose up to $450,000 annually.

Beyond financial setbacks, she emphasized that poor communication erodes trust and credibility, with one in five business leaders admitting to significant losses due to communication failures. Additionally, 68% of executives who lost deals to miscommunication reported losses of $10,000 or more per incident.

Aptis English Proficiency Test Launched to Address Communication Gaps

Speaking at the formal launch of the Aptis English proficiency test in Lagos, organized by the British Council and Poise Nigeria, Isibor described the tool as a game-changer designed to enhance business communication skills, boost employee confidence, and improve workplace performance.

She noted that Aptis provides a comprehensive evaluation of English language skills, allowing employees to identify weaknesses, track progress, and improve overall business communication.

“Aptis empowers employees to pinpoint areas for improvement and measure staff development. I am confident it will help businesses achieve their goals and reach new heights,” she said.

A Smarter Approach to Business Communication

British Council’s Director of Examinations in Nigeria, Deep Adhikari, described Aptis as an innovative and efficient tool for evaluating English proficiency. Covering all four key language skills—writing, reading, speaking, and listening—he noted that it would transform workplace communication and create better business opportunities.

Adding to this, Uchechi Awaraka explained that Aptis provides reliable results mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and is trusted by governments and institutions in over 85 countries.

“By ensuring employees have the right communication skills, businesses can enhance productivity, strengthen corporate culture, and foster international partnerships. As part of this initiative, Poise Nigeria has been appointed as the official Aptis reseller in Nigeria on behalf of the British Council,” she said.

The event brought together industry leaders and representatives from various organizations, underscoring Aptis’ potential to drive business development, skill enhancement, and career progression in Nigeria’s corporate sector.
