Taking a strong stance against the detrimental effects of plastic bottle waste pollution, the Coca-Cola System in Nigeria has unveiled a series of modifications to its bottle design.
During the Annual System Beach Cleanup event in Lagos, Nwamaka Onyemelukwe, Director of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability at Coca-Cola Nigeria, announced the company’s commitment to addressing the environmental concerns associated with plastic bottle disposal.
Onyemelukwe emphasized the need for bottle modifications in order to mitigate the negative impact of plastic waste on the environment when bottles are not adequately recycled.
She explained, “The previous Coke bottle container was so thick that people used it for various purposes, but we have taken action. We are introducing lighter plastic bottles.”
The objective behind the introduction of lighter plastic bottles is to facilitate easy compression by users after consumption, resulting in reduced space occupation and increased recyclability.
Coca-Cola Nigeria aims to ensure that its packaging materials are responsibly managed and do not contribute to environmental nuisances.
Onyemelukwe acknowledged the public perception of Coca-Cola as a major contributor to pollution due to the popularity of its beverages. She stated, “We want to assure our consumers that we are fully committed to minimizing our environmental impact.”
By implementing these bottle modifications, Coca-Cola Nigeria strives to lead the way in sustainable packaging and contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
