Democracy Derailed: Oyo’s Local Elections Disenfranchise 80% of Voters, Alleges APC

The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, Wale Sadare, has made startling claims regarding the recent local government elections in Oyo State. According to Sadare, a staggering 80% of eligible voters were intentionally prevented from casting their ballots during the elections held on April 27, 2024.

These accusations come in the wake of the election results announced by the Chairman of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission, Isiaka Olagunju (SAN), which saw the Peoples Democratic Party clinching victory in all 33 local government areas of the state.

Sadare minced no words in denouncing the electoral process, labeling it as a “complete sham” and an assault on democracy. He squarely blamed the governor and the PDP for orchestrating what he described as a miscarriage of justice in collaboration with the state’s Independent Electoral body.

The APC spokesperson emphasized that his party had anticipated a fair and transparent electoral exercise but was met with disappointment. He vowed that the leadership of the APC would convene soon to deliberate on the matter and announce their course of action.

This outcry follows a previous demand by the APC for the cancellation of the local government election, citing its failure to meet “minimum global standards,” as reported by Saturday PUNCH on April 27, 2024.

As allegations and counter-allegations continue to swirl, the integrity of the electoral process in Oyo State remains under scrutiny, with political tensions running high.
