The Chief Executive Officer of Pelican Valley Nigeria Ltd, Dr. Babatunde Adeyemo, has cautioned Nigerians in the diaspora about the importance of due diligence when purchasing land in Nigeria. Speaking to The PUNCH, Adeyemo highlighted that many diasporans fail to verify property ownership and legalities, often leading to issues such as demolition.
Adeyemo’s comments follow a viral plea by U.S. doctor Kimberly Stark, who called on Nigeria’s president for help after her properties were demolished. Stark revealed she had purchased over six plots of land in Nigeria but was left devastated by the government’s actions.

Sympathizing with Stark, Adeyemo stressed the need for thorough research before land purchases, including verifying government approvals and checking if the land is free from acquisition. “Real estate is not a gamble; you must investigate the proprietor and management behind the property,” he said.
Real estate expert Victor Oyefeso echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that land buyers must secure legal documents, such as deeds of assignment and registered surveys, to avoid disputes or demolition. He added that unfenced or unoccupied lands are particularly vulnerable to encroachment.
Both experts urged diasporans to collaborate with credible agencies, like the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, to safeguard their investments and ensure compliance with property laws.
