Dismissal of Police Inspectors and Vigilante Members Over Alleged Robbery and Corruption

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 2, Mohammed Ali, has issued the dismissal of two Police Inspectors, Sunday Adetoye and Ogunleye Stephen, following their involvement in armed robbery, official corruption, and illegal duty. The two officers, previously stationed at Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos, faced an Orderly Room trial, leading to their dismissal.

Inspectors Adetoye (Force number 279495) and Stephen (Force number 223521), along with two members of a Vigilante Group identified as Semiu Afisu and Abidoye Femi, and a driver named Charles John, were accused of assaulting a residence in Obada-Oko community, Ogun State, on November 23, 2023, around 10 pm. Armed with two Submachine SMG rifles and live ammunition, the group allegedly conducted an unauthorized search on the apartment of Taiwo Monsuru and Akintola Sunday, stealing various items, including five iPhones, one Samsung smartphone, one Tecno smartphone, and two laptop computers.

According to the Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Umma Ayuba, police officers from Ifo Division set up a roadblock after being informed of the incident by other residents. The occupants of the vehicle, including Inspectors Adetoye and Stephen, were apprehended, excluding ASP Ajayi Victor, who led the illegal operation and is currently at large.

The AIG has instructed that the dismissed officers be taken to court alongside the civilian individuals involved. A stern message has been conveyed to all officers and personnel of the force, emphasizing the need for professionalism in the discharge of their duties, with accountability for actions or inactions.
