FAAN Seeks N580bn to Rehabilitate Airport Runways

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has revealed that it requires N580 billion to rehabilitate runways at airports nationwide. FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, expressed concerns about the deteriorating state of the country’s runways during a meeting on Wednesday with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Kana.

Kuku explained that most of the runways, originally built in the late 1970s, have outlived their lifespan and are in urgent need of repair. She also highlighted that other key airport infrastructures, such as terminals, are similarly outdated and require significant upgrades.

This has been affecting both operational efficiency and safety, creating a pressing need for substantial investment.

She further noted that the runways’ lifespan typically spans between 20 to 25 years, with many airports in Nigeria having been built in 1978.

In addition to the aging infrastructure, FAAN faces security challenges at the airports, particularly with the increasing volume of air travel and the potential for terrorist threats. Despite efforts to enhance security, the authority continues to struggle with managing risks at key locations.

Kuku emphasized that the proposed N580 billion investment is critical to ensuring the modernization of airports across the country, boosting safety, and improving overall operational standards.
