Lagos, August 21, 2025 Former Super Eagles forward Brown Ideye has officially retired from professional football, bringing to an end a career that spanned nearly two decades across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The 36-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement shared on his social media pages, expressing gratitude to God, his family, and supporters who stood by him throughout his journey.

“After much thought and consideration, with mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” Ideye wrote. “This game made me and gave me everything incredible joy, sad days, the opportunity to travel and see the world, lifelong friendships, and so many unforgettable memories.”

Ideye, who began his career at Nigerian club Ocean Boys before moving abroad, enjoyed successful spells with Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, West Bromwich Albion in England, Aris Thessaloniki in Greece, and Malaga in Spain. He also played in China for Tianjin Teda and returned home to feature for Enyimba.

On the international stage, Ideye was part of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad under the late coach Stephen Keshi. He earned 27 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring six goals.

In his farewell message, the striker also thanked agents, coaches, journalists, and fans for their role in shaping his career.

“To every club I’ve had the honour of representing, every coach and teammate who pushed me, and every fan who supported me through highs and lows thank you. And thank you, Nigeria, for the opportunity to wear the national colours,” he said.

Though stepping away from professional football, Ideye hinted that his involvement in the sport is far from over.

“Though my time as a pro-player has come to an end, football will always be a part of my life as I enter my next chapter,” he said.

Ideye’s retirement marks the close of a career defined by perseverance, trophies, and a lasting impact on Nigerian football.
