From Nigeria to the U.S.: The Inspiring Journey of PhD Student and Entrepreneur Chukwudi Paul Obite

Tempe, Arizona — Chukwudi Paul Obite, currently in his third year as a PhD student in Statistics at Arizona State University (ASU), is more than just an academic. He is also the founder of OCP Analytics, a company dedicated to providing data analysis services and training in statistical software, embodying the intersection of theory and practice in the field of statistics.

Chukwudi’s journey from Nigeria to the United States is marked by his deep passion for statistics. “My time at ASU has been a journey of both academic and practical discovery,” he says. “In Nigeria, the focus is on theoretical knowledge, while in the U.S., there’s a greater emphasis on applying that knowledge using statistical software.”

This practical approach is something Chukwudi has carried into his entrepreneurial venture with OCP Analytics. His company offers training in software like Python, R, and SPSS, and provides data analysis services to help businesses and researchers make informed decisions. A recent highlight of his work includes a contract with Family Worship in Abuja, where he conducted a three-day SPSS training for their staff.

Balancing the responsibilities of being a PhD student, a Graduate Teaching Associate, and a business owner is no easy task. However, Chukwudi’s background as a lecturer in Nigeria has equipped him with the skills needed to manage his time effectively and excel in both academic and business settings.

Academically, Chukwudi is thriving. He maintains a perfect 4.0/4.0 CGPA and has been recognized with awards such as the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and the Dennis Young Graduate and Early Scholar Statistics Award. His PhD research, which focuses on developing a Bayesian spatiotemporal model for infectious diseases, is progressing well and promises to contribute valuable insights to the field of public health.

With 22 published papers and more than 158 citations, Chukwudi’s work is already making an impact in both academia and industry. As he continues to navigate his dual roles as a scholar and entrepreneur, Chukwudi Paul Obite is set to become a leading figure in the world of statistics, both in Nigeria and beyond.
