After a sudden nationwide power outage in Nigeria attributed to a grid collapse, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported that power is gradually being restored.
The grid collapse was primarily caused by a significant drop in power generation from the GENCOS, resulting in a rapid increase in grid frequency. The incident, which occurred at around 1 am today, was aggravated by a fire at the Jebba power station in Niger state.
The Jebba power station is a crucial component of the power supply chain, and its disruption had a cascading effect on electricity distribution across the country. Regions including Enugu, Imo, Aba, Lagos, and Kano experienced a decline in power supply.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) issued a statement titled ‘Total System Collapse’ confirming the widespread blackout and stating that they were awaiting detailed information on the collapse and restoration efforts from the National Control Centre in Osogbo.
Fortunately, swift action by power authorities and response teams led to the containment of the fire at the Jebba Power Station. As a result, the gradual restoration of power has commenced, with Lagos fully back online, bringing hope to communities nationwide.
