Ogunleye Ruth Seeks Justice After Discharge
Private Ruth Ogunleye, a former soldier, has called on Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja to review the circumstances surrounding her discharge from the Nigerian Army. Ogunleye was dismissed after accusing a senior officer, Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, of sexual harassment.
In a heartfelt TikTok post on Tuesday, Ogunleye expressed remorse for any disrespect shown to the COAS, explaining that her actions stemmed from frustration in her quest to clear her name. “From the depth of my heart, I am very sorry, sir. I apologize; please have mercy on me. This concerns my name and reputation,” she stated.
Allegations of Misconduct
Ogunleye claimed that during her service, she faced multiple harassment attempts from Colonel Abdulkareem, including forced medical interventions and confinement to a psychiatric facility after rejecting his advances. In her January 2024 TikTok posts, she detailed her experiences and urged for accountability.
Investigation Outcomes
Following her allegations, the Army launched an investigation, which concluded that Colonel Abdulkareem had not committed the offenses alleged by Ogunleye. Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed that the investigation was thorough and based on factual evidence. He also noted that Ogunleye had been recommended for discharge on medical grounds since 2022, and the Army had provided her with necessary medical treatment before her dismissal.
Ogunleye’s Clarification
In a subsequent video, Ogunleye clarified her apology to the COAS, asserting that she was not blackmailed but was simply expressing regret for any perceived disrespect. She reiterated that her fight was not against the Nigerian Army, but specifically against Colonel Abdulkareem.
As the situation continues to develop, Ogunleye’s plea highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of women in the military and the challenges they face in seeking justice for allegations of misconduct.
