Huawei Showcases 5G’s Transformative Potential at MTN Innovation Event

Huawei Technologies took center stage once again as it hosted the MTN Media Innovation Programme (MIP) Fellows at an exciting 5G demo event and training session. The event, held on July 19, 2023, at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, aimed to educate the fellows about 5G technology, showcase its diverse use cases, and inspire innovation in their reporting on technology.

The MTN Media Innovation Programme, a fully funded 6-week-long initiative, provides training for media practitioners in Nigeria over six months in collaboration with the Pan-Atlantic University. The programme not only enhances the skills of the fellows but also offers an all-expense-paid study trip to South Africa.

During the event, Huawei’s technical team presented a series of disruptive use cases that exemplified the transformative potential of 5G technology. From healthcare and transportation to energy and smart cities, the demonstrations highlighted how 5G is revolutionizing connectivity and improving lives in the present and the future.

Aihao Yin, Director of Business Solutions and Service Experience at Huawei, addressed the current penetration of 5G technology in Nigeria, stating that while it remains relatively low, the technology has already made significant societal impact with use cases such as hologram technology from MTN, Internet of Things (IoT), AR/VR, and more. Yin emphasized that the main advantage of 5G is its remarkable speed, being three times faster than 4G, and noted that Nigeria holds great potential for wider 5G adoption.

Throughout the week, the MTN Media Innovation Programme provided valuable insights into various subjects, including telecoms and the evolution of ICT from 2G to 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain Technology, Business Revenue Models, and 5G use cases in Nigeria. These sessions deepened the participants’ understanding of the advancements enabled by 5G technology and its transformative impact across industries.
