
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) initiated the security audit of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja on Monday.
The audit, part of the 2024 ICAO Universal Security Audit Programme (USAP) conducted through Continuous Monitoring Approach (CMA), is scheduled to conclude on March 22, 2024. It will encompass various aspects such as Inflight Security (IFS), Passenger and Baggage Security (PAX), Acts of Unlawful Interference (AUI), Facilitation (FAL), Legislation (LEG), Training (TRG), Quality Control Function (QCF), Operations (OPS), and Cargo, Mail, and Catering (CGO).
The four-member team, led by Callum Vine, includes James Mabala, Tebogo Mphela, and Alagie Jeng. In a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, it was disclosed that the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, extended a warm welcome to the auditors, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to upholding the highest aviation security standards.
Keyamo, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, lauded the dedication of stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, security agencies, service providers, and aviation security personnel, in ensuring the success of Nigeria’s aviation security initiatives. He expressed optimism that Nigeria would not encounter any Significant Security Concerns.
Acting Director General of Civil Aviation, Nigeria, Capt. Chris Najomo, outlined the objectives of the ICAO USAP CMA, emphasizing its aim to enhance global aviation security through auditing and continuous monitoring of member states’ aviation security performance. The audit aims to assess the level of effective implementation of critical elements of the states’ aviation security oversight system, indicating the sustainability of their aviation security systems.
Capt. Najomo highlighted that MMIA in Lagos and NAIA in Abuja were selected for on-site auditing to verify the implementation of security measures. He expressed confidence that Nigeria would surpass its previous rating due to progressive industry transformations and the current administration’s commitment to ensuring secure, safe, and efficient air transportation in Nigeria.
