Lagos, Nigeria – August 15, 2024 – Lagos State has selected 200 women to represent it in the nationwide “Every Home A Garden” farming competition, an initiative of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The competition, aimed at promoting home farming and addressing the soaring food prices, offers a grand prize of N20 million.
Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, expressed confidence in the state’s ability to clinch the top prize. She revealed that the 200 participants were carefully chosen from a pool of over 1,000 applicants.
To ensure fair competition, the Lagos State government implemented stringent measures, including requiring participants to provide Lagos State Residents Registration Agency numbers. The state also plans to reward the 200 selected farmers and an additional 50 experienced ones with consolation prizes to encourage continued participation in home gardening.
As hunger protests continue to grip the nation, the “Every Home A Garden” competition is seen as a potential solution to the food crisis.
Hunger Crisis Looms Large
While the Lagos State government is optimistic about the farming competition, the ongoing hunger protests serve as a stark reminder of the nation’s food security challenges.
