Chelsea Defender Hits Back After Spain’s Triumphant Win
In the wake of Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella responded to earlier criticism from former England international and pundit Gary Neville via social media.
Spain clinched the Euro 2024 title by defeating England 2-1 in a thrilling final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion. The decisive goal came from Mikel Oyarzabal in the 86th minute, following a precise cross from Cucurella.
The Spanish team, under the leadership of Luis de la Fuente, showcased an impressive campaign with seven victories and only one match requiring extra time. Cucurella played a crucial role, featuring in all but one group stage match.
On Sunday, Cucurella took to Instagram to share Neville’s pre-tournament comments that had questioned Spain’s chances and Cucurella’s inclusion in the squad. Neville had remarked on ITV Sport, “I didn’t think he’d play. He’s not been convincing at Chelsea. He’s played a few games towards the end of the season. He’s aggressive, he’s tenacious, he’s a busy little fullback. The price tag still astounds everyone to this day. The Spanish defence, it’s got a lot of experience now but there’s something just missing from Spain that makes you feel like they’re going to go all the way.”
Cucurella’s pointed response after Spain’s victory read, “We went all the way Gary. Thanks for your support,” accompanied by emojis of a heart, trophy, Spanish flag, and a kiss.
Adding to the playful exchange, Cucurella’s partner, Claudia Rodriguez, posted a photo of him celebrating with the trophy, captioning it, “How was your night, @gneville2?”
Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, reflected on the team’s success, stating, “I was sure that my players believed in me … for a year and a half they have been infallible.” He added, “Now it’s all happiness, pride and enjoying this moment that we have earned. Nobody gave us anything for free.”
Spain’s journey to the championship highlighted their resilience and skill, culminating in a memorable and well-deserved victory.
