The Media Career Development Network (MCDN) has released its Media Career Check-Up Report 2025, a comprehensive review designed to help Nigerian journalists assess their career progress, identify growth gaps, and access tailored guidance for professional advancement.
In a press statement, MCDN’s Executive Director, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, said the report titled “Media Career Check-Up 2025: Lessons, Gaps, and Growth Paths for Nigerian Journalists” was developed from personalized assessments with practitioners across diverse beats and media platforms.
“The findings highlight common challenges in career planning, mentorship, digital skills, welfare, work-life balance, and leadership development,” Otufodunrin noted. “The report also offers practical recommendations for strengthening journalism in Nigeria, such as promoting mentorship, ensuring continuous professional development, and prioritizing initiatives that support journalists’ well-being.”
According to MCDN, the report serves not only as a personal guide for journalists but also as a valuable resource for newsroom leaders and media support organisations seeking to enhance sustainability and growth in the profession.
“Just as regular health check-ups help individuals stay healthy, journalists also need career check-ups to reflect, adjust, and grow in their work,” Otufodunrin explained. “This report provides a snapshot of the struggles many journalists face and outlines what they need to thrive.”
To further engage the industry, MCDN announced plans to hold newsroom briefings with editors and media managers to discuss the findings and explore strategies for supporting career development among their teams.
