The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has addressed speculations and misinformation circulating on social media about the rollout of 5G services by MAFAB Communications. The NCC clarified that MAFAB, one of the two companies that won a 5G Licence in the globally acclaimed transparent 5G Auction held on December 13, 2021, successfully launched its services in Abuja in January 2023.
The statement, signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, was released to media houses in Abuja on Wednesday. The telecom regulatory body confirmed that after fulfilling the required condition of payment for the fee of $273.6 million in February 2022, MAFAB formally received the 5G licence on February 22, 2022.
Subsequently, MAFAB adhered to the rollout conditions and publicly launched its 5G services in Abuja on January 24, 2023, and in Lagos on January 26, 2023. At the time of launch, the services were targeted at six cities – Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Kaduna.
The NCC emphasized that it has been closely monitoring MAFAB’s rollout progress and has been regularly briefed about the company’s infrastructure deployment for service offerings, as specified in its operating licence.
In conclusion, the NCC urged the public and all stakeholders to disregard false and misleading information regarding the 5G rollout by MAFAB Communications.
“The public and all stakeholders should ignore the false and misleading information concerning the 5G rollout by MAFAB.”
