New Borno Police Chief Vows Zero Tolerance for Corruption, Human Rights Violations

The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Borno State, CP Ibrahim Musa, has issued a strong warning to officers under his command, emphasizing that corruption and human rights abuses will not be tolerated under his leadership.

Speaking during his inaugural address at the Borno State Police Command headquarters in Maiduguri, CP Musa stressed that rebuilding public trust and maintaining professional integrity are critical to effective policing, especially in a state still grappling with the aftermath of insurgency.

“I will not hesitate to discipline any officer found engaging in bribery, extortion, or the violation of citizens’ rights,” he declared. “We must be accountable to the people we are sworn to protect.”

The CP also highlighted the need for improved community relations, urging officers to adopt a service-first approach and work collaboratively with residents, traditional leaders, and civil society groups.

Borno, which has seen years of conflict due to Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgencies, remains one of Nigeria’s most security-sensitive states. Citizens have often complained of heavy-handed tactics, unlawful arrests, and corruption within the ranks of law enforcement.

Human rights advocates have welcomed CP Musa’s stance, calling it a step in the right direction. “Accountability is key to restoring confidence in security institutions,” said Hauwa Ibrahim, a Maiduguri-based legal activist. “We hope his words translate into real reform.”

CP Musa takes over at a time when public cooperation and ethical law enforcement are more crucial than ever to sustaining peace and stability in the region.
