Indian authorities have arrested a Nigerian citizen caught attempting to smuggle drugs valued at approximately N214 million (about $520,000) into the country, marking a significant bust in ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trafficking.
The suspect, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigation, was detained at the Indira Gandhi International Airport during a routine security screening. Officials discovered a large quantity of illegal substances concealed in his luggage.
According to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the seizure included a mixture of hard drugs believed to be heroin and cocaine, substances prohibited under Indian law.
“The arrest highlights the transnational nature of drug trafficking and our commitment to preventing the inflow of illicit substances into India,” an NCB spokesperson said.
The suspect is currently undergoing interrogation as authorities work to dismantle the broader network involved in the smuggling operation. Legal proceedings are expected to commence in the coming weeks.
This incident adds to growing concerns about international drug trafficking routes involving West African nationals and underscores the importance of cross-border cooperation in law enforcement.
Indian law enforcement agencies continue to intensify border controls and surveillance to curb the illegal drug trade.
