The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) is intensifying efforts to combat the persistent challenge of oil theft in Nigeria’s petroleum sector by seeking enhanced collaboration with the Nigerian Police. The aim is to curb illicit activities that have negatively impacted the nation’s Oil and Gas industry.
During a visit to the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force, Kayode Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Engr Gbenga Komolafe, the Chief Executive of NUPRC, emphasized the urgent need for a unified front against the escalating challenges posed by oil theft.
Describing the severity of the menace and its detrimental effects on the country’s economy, Komolafe underscored the importance of joint efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s commonwealth. He briefed the Inspector General on the Commission’s ongoing efforts in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant government bodies. The Chief Executive highlighted the necessity for a collaborative and strategically coordinated approach, seeking a partnership with the Nigerian Police to leverage their expertise in law enforcement, particularly in apprehending and prosecuting perpetrators.
In response to the request, the Inspector General acknowledged the severe impact of oil theft on both the financial landscape and the country’s reputation. He expressed agreement on the urgent need for action to address the situation, emphasizing its importance for the growth and stability of Nigeria’s national economy.
