The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Bashir Jamoh, has called on the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) to consider reviewing its enabling law, stating that it does not align with modern realities.
During a working visit by the Executive Secretary of NSC, Pius Ukeyima Akutah, to NIMASA, Dr. Jamoh emphasized the crucial role that enabling acts play in the performance and effectiveness of government agencies. He informed Akutah about the progress made by the National Assembly in enacting a reviewed NIMASA Act, expressing optimism that it would significantly enhance the agency’s performance.
Dr. Jamoh welcomed the visit and stressed the need for collaboration between the two agencies for the success of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry. He highlighted that the current Nigerian Shippers Council Act, enacted through Decree 13 of 1978, might need reconsideration in light of modern-day realities.
In response, the Executive Secretary of the Shippers’ Council commended NIMASA’s achievements and expressed the desire for collaboration to leverage those accomplishments. The Nigerian Shippers’ Council serves as the country’s Port Economic Regulator and a trade facilitation agency, promoting fair trade practices in the shipping and port services industry. Its mandate includes establishing an enabling environment and implementing an efficient economic regulatory system in the transport sector. The council operates under the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
