Ibadan, Oyo State – September 18, 2024
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Ige, has committed to supporting the realisation of UNICEF’s objectives in Oyo State, particularly in the protection of children’s rights. The monarch made this promise on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) team to his Oke Aremo palace in Ibadan.
Speaking through Chief Olalekan Alabi, the Maye Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin praised the choice of Ibadan as a focal point for the UNICEF initiative, noting the city’s historical role in Nigeria’s development. He emphasized Ibadan’s importance as a center for political, social, and economic progress, citing key milestones such as the establishment of the University College Hospital (UCH), the University of Ibadan, and Africa’s first television station.
“Ibadan has been at the forefront of major developments in Nigeria. The city’s legacy makes it a fitting location for advancing UNICEF’s efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality and address other health and social issues,” the Olubadan stated.
The UNICEF team, led by Mohammed Okorie, visited the monarch to seek his support in raising awareness and mobilizing communities to utilize UNICEF’s services in Oyo State. Okorie highlighted the need for greater community engagement in protecting children’s rights and ensuring access to essential healthcare services, including antenatal care for expectant mothers.
“We are appealing to the Olubadan and his council to help mobilize the people of Oyo State to take advantage of the facilities and opportunities provided by UNICEF,” Okorie said, stressing the importance of sensitizing parents and guardians about children’s rights and healthcare.
The Olubadan’s pledge marks a significant step in bolstering UNICEF’s outreach in the region, with the hope that increased community involvement will lead to better health outcomes for children and families across Oyo State.
