
Abuja, Nigeria β At least 223,097 profiled beneficiaries across 17 states have received funding as part of the $546 million Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), initiated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
Launched to enhance livestock productivity, commercialization, and resilience in Nigeria, the L-PRES project is designed to address key challenges in the sector. βThe project encompasses several critical components, including Institution and Innovation System Strengthening ($95 million), Animal Husbandry and Advisory Support Services ($40 million), Animal Health Services ($40 million), Livestock Value Chain Enhancement ($275 million), Crisis Prevention and Conflict Mitigation ($100 million), and Natural Resources Management and Pasture Improvement ($70 million),β explained Sanusi Abubakar, the national project coordinator, during a media workshop in Abuja.
Funded by a $500 million loan obtained in 2021, complemented by $46 million in counterpart funding over six years, the L-PRES initiative is set to run from 2022 to 2028. The project aims to improve various aspects of the livestock value chain, with implementation carried out through a Subsidiary Loan Agreement (SLA) at the state level, while the National Coordination Office (NCO) provides necessary technical support and guidance.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the livelihoods of livestock farmers and addressing food security challenges in Nigeria.
