PDP Applauds Court Judgment Confirming Asue Ighodalo as Edo Governorship Candidate

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed satisfaction with the Federal High Court’s decision confirming Dr. Asue Ighodalo as its gubernatorial candidate for the September 21, 2024, election in Edo State.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered the judgment on Wednesday, upholding Ighodalo’s nomination despite earlier controversies surrounding the primary election process. The court’s ruling in the case marked CS/469/24 dismissed a lawsuit challenging Ighodalo’s candidacy, affirming that he was duly nominated at the PDP primaries held on February 22 at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

The litigation arose from a challenge filed by discontented delegates represented by Kelvin Mohammed, which led to Justice Inyang Ekwo’s initial invalidation of the primary election on July 4. The court cited unlawful exclusion of 378 delegates who had the right to vote, citing breaches of electoral laws and party guidelines.

Reacting to the latest judgment, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the decision as a victory for democracy and the rule of law. Ologunagba emphasized that the ruling affirmed the credibility of the primary election and the internal democracy of the PDP.

In a statement, Ologunagba said, “The Party describes the landmark judgement which upheld the PDP Edo State Governorship Primary election held on February 22, 2024, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City as a victory for democracy, rule of law and a well-founded affirmation of the propriety and credibility of the primary election and PDP’s internal democracy.”

He further noted the spontaneous jubilation across Edo State following the judgment, reaffirming Ighodalo as the preferred candidate of the majority ahead of the upcoming election. The PDP urged party members to remain united and work together towards ensuring victory in the governorship polls.

This affirmation sets the stage for Dr. Asue Ighodalo to contest in the forthcoming governorship election, backed by the support of the party and its members in Edo State.
