Subscribers Reject 50% Telecom Tariff Hike, Threaten Legal Action Against NCC

The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has vowed to sue the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over its approval of a 50% increase in telecom tariffs.

The NCC approved the hike on January 20, following requests from the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria for higher tariffs. While the operators initially sought a 100% increase, the NCC capped it at 50%.

NATCOMS President, Deolu Ogunbanjo, criticized the decision, stating that subscribers were not consulted in the process. He expressed concern that the tariff hike would significantly impact businesses, including small-scale operators like Point of Service (POS) providers, and lead to increased operational costs. Ogunbanjo had previously suggested a modest 5-10% increase to support the struggling sector without overburdening users.

The association also proposed that telecom operators explore alternative funding options, such as an Initial Public Offer (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange, rather than imposing a substantial tariff increase. Ogunbanjo warned that subscribers would challenge the hike in court.
