Speaking at the 2024 annual professional workshop and luncheon themed “The Practice of Cadastral; Understanding The Technicalities, Ethics, Market Dynamics, Policies, Innovation/Reforms, Value Added Services, and its Politics,” the surveyors urged their colleagues to adhere to ethical standards and leverage technology to promote sustainable and quality cadastral practices.
Guest lecturer Olumide Adewebi, the immediate past Vice President of the International Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, called on practitioners to avoid sharp practices that could damage their professional reputation. “Surveying is a competitive business, and professionals must break the cycle of undercutting and agent signing while addressing the challenges of cadastral practice to ensure sustainability,” he stated.
Adewebi advocated for enhanced training, education, and regulations to tackle quackery and foster growth in the cadastral sector.
In his welcome address, Ibikunle Adaranijo, Chairman of the Lagos branch of APPSN, noted that the event aimed to educate professionals on emerging trends and equip them with essential knowledge in cadastral practice. He appealed for support from all stakeholders in the ongoing fight against quackery and reiterated the association’s commitment to this cause.
“We will not relent on our campaign against quackery. Our weekly radio program on Radio Lagos highlights this issue, and we are already seeing positive results,” Adaranijo remarked. He also mentioned that unethical practices within the profession are being prioritized, citing recent suspensions of surveyors from the Office of the Surveyor General for unethical conduct, who are now facing trial.
The APPSN chairman reaffirmed the association’s dedication to educating and training its members to keep pace with current trends in the surveying profession.
