The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a disruption in the national grid on Thursday morning following a sudden spike in frequency, from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, caused by technical issues at one of its substations. The substation was shut down to prevent further complications.
In a statement, TCN confirmed that recovery efforts were initiated promptly, leading to a partial restoration of power to the Abuja axis within 28 minutes. Ongoing repair and upgrade works are underway on key transmission lines and substations, including the Shiroro–Mando 330kV line and Jebba Transmission Substation.
Despite these efforts, TCN acknowledged that some instability may persist in the system, urging public patience as they address systemic weaknesses identified in a recent report on previous grid collapses. The company also highlighted that issues with distribution infrastructure continue to hamper the full utilization of the national grid’s generation capacity.
