Twitter has issued a strong warning of potential legal action against Meta, the parent company of Instagram, over its newly introduced platform, Threads. The text-based companion app to Instagram, which bears similarities to other text-based social platforms like Twitter, has raised concerns and prompted Twitter’s attorney to send a letter to Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
Within the first day of its launch, Threads garnered an impressive 30 million sign-ups, surpassing its competitors by a significant margin, as announced by Zuckerberg.
According to Forbes, just hours after the unveiling of Threads, Alex Spiro, an attorney representing Twitter, penned a letter to Zuckerberg accusing Meta of misusing Twitter’s “trade secrets and other intellectual property” in the development of its rival app. The letter emphasizes Twitter’s concern over the alleged infringement and signals their intention to take legal action if necessary.
The accusations made by Twitter raise the stakes in the intensifying competition between social media giants, as they seek to protect their proprietary technologies and prevent any unauthorized use of their intellectual property. The outcome of this potential legal dispute between Twitter and Meta will likely have significant implications for the future of the Threads app and the broader landscape of social media platforms.
The attorney wrote: “Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.
“Twitter reserves all rights, including, but not limited to, the right to seek both civil remedies and injunctive relief without further notice to prevent any further retention, disclosure, or use of its intellectual property by Meta.”
Spiro also accused Meta of hiring dozens of ex-Twitter employees who had access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information to develop the ‘Threads’ app.
