Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has expressed his support for the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest in Nigeria, while questioning President Bola Tinubu’s current stance on civic demonstrations.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, Secondus reminded President Tinubu of his past involvement in leading protests against government actions while in opposition. “President Tinubu was a notable figure in protests against the government,” Secondus said. “It is perplexing why he now opposes similar civic actions.”
Secondus underscored the role of peaceful protests in addressing Nigeria’s ongoing challenges, criticizing the current state of governance and the lack of accountability. “The worsening state of our country is partly due to citizens’ failure to hold governments accountable,” he stated.
Describing the planned protest as a non-partisan and altruistic effort by Nigerian citizens, Secondus argued that it is crucial for raising national awareness and urging the leadership elite to act in the public’s interest. “Protests are a powerful democratic tool to awaken the consciousness of nations and compel leadership to act responsibly,” he said.
He urged protesters to remain organized and peaceful and called on the government and security agencies to ensure a secure environment for the demonstrations, in accordance with international law and the Nigerian Constitution.
“This is not the time to ignore pressing issues; it is the time to confront power and ignite our collective conscience to build a better society,” the statement concluded.
