The X platform, formerly recognized as Twitter, underwent a significant outage today, disrupting users’ ability to access their timelines for over an hour. Users across mobile apps encountered frozen timelines, while the web version displayed a placeholder message welcoming users to X but providing no timeline content. Despite the platform still allowing posting, the posts vanished upon refresh. Notably, major accounts, including those of Elon Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino, became inaccessible.
A Space hosted by New York Times reporter Ryan Mac currently engages over 800 people, discussing the outage despite the inability to see new posts. Push notifications for new posts are active, and accounts with notifications turned on continue to appear in the feed. The API Status page for the service has not indicated any ongoing issues.
The problems began just before 12:30 AM ET, according to reports on DownDetector. As of now, there is no clear information on the cause of the issue or an estimated time for service restoration.
This marks another significant disruption for the platform, following last week’s issue affecting outgoing links. Despite attempts to seek clarification through the platform’s PR account email, users received only an automated “Busy now, please check back later” response. Downdetector recorded a staggering 70,000 reports of difficulties using the X platform at the time of reporting.
This outage is reminiscent of similar incidents earlier this year in March and July, with Downdetector documenting thousands of outages in the United States and the United Kingdom during those periods. Users relying on Premium services or awaiting payment will need to seek updates through alternative channels regarding the status of X.
